When I was active as DA Fae Monitor on Shadownessnce and we ran Dark Ages month, we had a contest for folks to re-write a Grimm's fairytale based off either the full tale itself or just a line from it. You had to incorporate the Fae from the book into it. I always liked my sample tale and thought of it today as Autumn has arrived and thoughts turn towards the more grim (pardon the pun) things. Plus Julia's Goblin pic brought it back to mind. Feedback if you like but it isn't necessary.

Grimm’s Twisted Tales

Fairytales are things we have grown up on. Many of us can name several fairytales with little thought when asked. My challenge to you is to take a classic Grimm’s Fairytale and turn it into a short tale for Dark Ages Fae. (The challenge - the award was a DA Fae book). I took inspiration from the one line below

Here is an example:

The Tale of Misfortune

"When Misfortune is after someone, that person may try to hide in all sorts of places or flee into the open fields, but misfortune will still know where to find him." – The Complete Tales of the Brothers Grimm

Several years ago, an Autumn Inanime by name of Misfortune ruled the forest near a small village in the southern Ukraine. He had Oaths with the villagers that none may take any living wood from his forest and in return, he would guarantee the wolves would not trouble their flocks. For centuries, these Oaths held until the day a new man came into the village. The brash outsider scoffed at the Oaths and the old ways. The villagers warned him in fear and threatened that Misfortune would find him. But Ulrich paid them no heed, boldly proclaiming he would go into the forest and cut some firewood.

Misfortune was traveling through his woods one day and stopped to listen to his trees. They told the fae of a stranger stalking through with a sharp tooth in hand. They told of brethren falling before this tooth. And Misfortune wept for the loss of his wood and grew angry for an Oath betrayed. Calling upon the powers of the Fae, Misfortune called forth the wolves to find Ulrich’s flock and devour them. It was the first indication of Misfotune’s coming.

Ulrich awoke to the sound of his sheep’s slaughter. In panic, he could not fathom what caused such a fate to befall him. He stumbled from his bed with his axe to fend off the wolves. The wolves, completed with the task of eating the sheep, turned upon Ulrich and took after him. He ran. Ulrich ran in his night shirt through the town, screaming for aid. The villagers, as one, turned their backs and said “Misfortune has come for you.” And he ran on, wolves at his heels, straight into the forest.

a certain thing you used to do regularly? It isn't a regret, just an occassional wistful pull on the psyche regarding something, a nostalgia calling. I get this way about singing and dancing. Do not mistake me, I sing and dance at the drop of a hat. One could even say I live in a musical. I get my Rock Band on for my vocalist fix and clean to my rave, dancing to get my club fix. But sometimes...I remember the dream. The lights, the stage, the student uprising and the poor Eponine destined to love the wrong man for her. I always wanted to play her. I am much too old now. So many musicals I dream of...Kiss me Kate is another one, though a bit out of my vocal range nowadays for Kate. Her soprano highs are too high for my mezzo soprano/contra-alto voice. Maybe if I had kept training, but I did not. Anyway, it is my thought for the day.

Reply to this post by yelling "Words!" and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Then post them in your LJ and explain what they mean to you. Thanks to Pretty Arbitrary this is what I have:

Redheads: Fiery, passionate, intense, adventurous, curious, beautiful, fey, Welsh/Scots/Irish, Celts. I have a penchant for redheads being one myself which is odd. Mainly women though. Redheaded men I can appreciate but I prefer my men dark haired. Of course the real cincher is the next one...

sexy brains: Dangerous aphrodisiac, makes love gender inspecific, great conversations about numerous topics, different perspectives, willing to debate but not argue -fine line difference. For me, it is well known everything comes down to the mind. The ability to create, discuss and collaborate makes me just hot. Makes no difference if it is a man or woman, I will be all sorts of excited in those type of events. Ask my husband or Jess or anyone I worked with at Shadownessence. I live for these moments. I also live to learn. It is a core part of my being. If I could be an eternal student, I would.

WoD: Fantastic setting for games with solid machanics, Dark Ages is my favorite, actually enjoyed the metaplot, absorbed the books like water and owns most of them still. Enjoy NWoD as well and am getting familiar with the line as we lapsed. What can I say...I am a groupie for WoD in all it's forms and the writers attached. I love Jess, Chuck, Matt, Aaron, Janet. They are an inspiration to my own writing as well as some pretty damn cool people. Add to that all the other awesome friends I have made either playing the game or discussing the game and I don't think I can say much bad about it.

lit: A true love, scent of paper, weight in your hands, leather against skin, philosophy, morality, parables/fables, fantasy, sci-fi, women's lit, magic realism, romanticism, southern gothic, gothic horror, naturalism. I have my Bachelor's in Literature. I love to read anything I can get my hands on, good, bad or indifferent. I try to assess after reading. Only one book ever bested me...The Red Badge of Courage I only got to page 5. I just couldn't empathize or slog through it. I even made it through some of my most hated writers...but that one, didn't work. I love Lit because much like the stage and music, it shows a window to the soul of humanity. It shows the best and worst of us. The question is...can people always see it.

Omaha: Henry Doorley Zoo, Orpheum Theatre, Strategic Air Command/Offutt AFB, home. Where I live with my family currently. It is not too shabby. A long way from my folks and extended family but it is ok. We do actually have quite a bit of culture around if you look, I just sometimes forget. :)

If there is one person or more on your friends list who makes your world a better place just because they exist and who you would not have met (in real life or not) without the internet, then post this same sentence in your journal.

Got my hubby back on the NWOD train finally. He is re-picking up (yes, he traded all my signed copies of the books as well as the others)of the WOD books, Hunter books, Slasher and I finally got Changeling. I just want to reiterate my thanks to all my writers friends on my list for really putting out quality work over these past few years, the caliber of artistry has always been outstanding for those of you on my list but to be able to see your writing as consistently as recently makes me giddy and excited.

I have rarely been so excited by any team of writers since the Dark Ages writers, they always get me hot.
